Choose resistance you can control
Find a useful starting weight without guessing a maximum.
Start with a practice set
Practice a new movement with a light load or an unloaded version. Choose resistance that lets you keep the intended movement steady, breathe and control the return. The right load can differ between exercises.
Let technique guide the next choice
If you need to swing or change position to finish, reduce the load or stop the set. Once your current load feels comfortably controlled, try a small increase at a later session. Log your completed reps and the weight so you have a useful reference next time.
Your first session is a starting point, not a strength test. A qualified trainer can help you learn equipment and check technique.
